There are certain times when an heating and air conditioning system is not only for your comfort, but is much needed for activities to take place, but this is the case with a hockey rink. The heating and air conditioning system in these buildings not only keeps the room temperature down but it also keeps the floors frozen. It works similar radiant heating except it does the opposite and cools the floor so that the ice stays solid for games and other events. Our child plays little league hockey and when we arrived at the rink last month for a tournament we were told that it was cancelled due to the fact that the heating and air conditioning system has broken. This was confusing at first because I had never given much thought to the fact that it was tied into the floor. Apparently the system had broken overnight and the floor had thawed by morning when the owner came to open up the building. He did have heating and air conditioning technicians working on the problem however the floor would not be refrozen in time to hold the tournament. I never gave much thought to any of this or the fact that heating and air conditioning workers are so important to the game of hockey. I certainly have a greater appreciation for that profession now that I know how much it affects my son’s life. Maintaining a solid piece of ice is important for the kid’s safety and any variance in temperatures can make a big difference. If the ice is too soft it could cause the kids to slip and fall more frequently. I know next time I contact our heating and air conditioning technician I will be sure and mention how much I learned about what they do and how important their work is.
