When the people I was with and I bought our home, I was delighted with the high ceilings, immense windows & wide open floor plan.
I suddenly realized that the new home was just about impossible to heat & cool.
I live in an section that is subjected to certainly extreme weather. It’s not unofficial for the temperature to dip down to twenty below zero in the Wintertide & climb up into the triple digits during the Summer weeks. The furnace & air conditioner carry a heavy workload! Heating & cooling makes up about half of the annual energy costs. I was spending a fortune on temperature control & yet there were drafts, sizzling spots & frosty pockets all over the house… No matter how I adjusted the thermostat, the new home was frosty during the worst of winter, & overheated throughout the summer. I had complications with airborne contaminants, humidity & unpleasant smells. Thinking that the ductlabor might be to blame, I hired a local Heating and A/C company to inspect the entire heating & cooling system & give suggestions. She performed several tests to measure the thermal envelope, including a blower door test, & discovered that a lack of insulation was the problem. I upset that we’d need to tear into walls & ceilings to add necessary insulation. Instead, the company provided blown-in insulation, which fills existing walls separate from damage or disruption. The smaller particles of the insulation conform around pipes & fill in odd-shaped areas. There was no mess or bad smells, & the whole process was completed within a few hours. The improvement in comfort & cleanliness of the new home has been tremendous. My energy bills are significantly lower, & there’s less wear & tear on the furnace & air conditioner. I’ve also noticed that we’re no longer disturbed by outdoor noises, such as traffic or barking dogs.
